1. Mr Worsham &
Sarah. Mr
Worsham may be John Worsham b abt 1780. John is in the 1830 Monroe Co, GA cens,
p204, as John Worsham b 1780-90 and the 1840 Marion Co, GA cens, p 64A, as
John Worsham b 1770-80.
It is possible John had a brother D G Worsham b 1790-1800. He is in the
1830 Monroe Co, GA census, p222, with 2 f b 1825-30, 1f b 1800-1810, next to D L
Harris, Randal Morgan, Enos Young, John McKee.
It is also possible John had a sister, listed as Martha Wosham b 1790-1800
who m 18 Mar 1827 in Monroe Co, GA to James Bell. In the 1830 Monroe Co, GA
cens, p 187, James Bell was b 1780-90.
Sarah (see paragraph 1, p 742) is in the 1850 Marion
Co, GA census
living with her daughter, Nancy & her son in law, William Howard.
In 1860 she is listed as Sally and living with her daughter Nancy Howard in
Columbus, Muscogee, GA.
Children:
1.1. Nancy Worsham

Howard. She fits in the 1830 Monroe Co, GA cens. living with John
Worsham as the female b 1800-10. She is in the 1850 Marion Co, GA cens., p.245

1.2. William A. Worsham
b abt 1810 Walton Co, GA is probably the son of John Worsham. In
the 1830 census William A. Worsham would be the son b 1810-15. William is in
the 1840 Marion Co, GA census p 66, with Males: 2 under 5, 1 5-10, 1 30-40;
Females 1 5-10, 1 20-30. Also note that in the 1840 census John is on p. 64A
& William is on p 66A.

1.2A.2. James D. Worsham b abt 1833 of Marion
Co, GA, may be s/o William A Worsham. He enlisted in the CSA on the same day
and place as William A Worsham, however, no evidence has been found to prove
he was a son.
Children of William & Sarah:
1.2B.1. John
T Worsham may be the s/o William A. Worsham (See new families
section John T Worsham). John T could be the male child age 5-10 of
William Worsham in the 1840 Marion Co, GA cens. It is difficult to believe
that John T is a s/o William A Worsham because William A. served for the
South in the Civil War & John T served for the North.

submarine Shark (SS 194) which was listed as overdue on patrol in the Netherlands East
Indies in February 1942. The Shark was sunk 11 Feb 1942. He is
memorialized at Manila American Cemetery, Fort Bonifacio, Manila, Philippines & his
grave is in Hopeful Baptist Church, Mitchell, GA.
John is mentioned in 20 Nov 1942 The Ellaville Sun: (Laura
Perry, 2007)
MOTHER OF MISSING BOY,
EDWIN WALL, RECALLS HIS GREAT WISH TO GO TO SEA by Mrs. Arch Avary
Seven days after the fall of Corregidor, an official telegram from the Bureau of
Navigation reached a farmhouse, six miles from Ellaville, bringing grief and
uncertainty to the family. Its wording, however, aroused in them a dim hope that
their only son, though reported missing, might still be alive.
Mrs. Welton Wall, a slight woman, 45, mother of the missing boy, was stunned by the
news and looked with unseeing eyes at the telegram in her hand. Hesitantly, she
began to speak as though more to herself than aloud.
"He might still be alive and in Japanese hands. He must be alive! Why just two
months ago, I received the routine card permitted past the censors, dated February
4. He was well then," she continued, "and promised a letter would follow", but no
letter came.
"Edwin was such a good boy and most of the time, jolly and laughing."
"One day, though," she reminisced, "when he was a little tike, he came home from
Glenn Holly school in tears, 'Mother,' he said, 'We had our pictures taken today,
and the teacher wouldn't give me time to take off this old sweater with the holes in
it.'
"He wanted a pair of overalls like his daddy's too, but when I made him a new pair,
he wasn't satisfied. 'Why Mother', he explained in
disappointment, 'they aren't like daddy's 'cause his have patches on the knees.'
That seems just like yesterday.
"Edwin used to help his father with the farm work on our 160 acres of rolling,
sandy, semi-marginal land, though only fifty-odd acres are in cultivation. We raise
corn, peanuts and peas, but my boy never liked farming."
"He used to listen to Uncle Webster and Uncle Don Wall," she continued, "tell tales
of the navy service during the other World War, and he developed a restless for the
sea. His father, a World War veteran, could never somehow interest Edwin in army
life.
"As he grew up, hunting and fishing were his main interests, and he would slip off
from home and spend hours in the woods."
Mrs. Wall went on, "Edwin liked to dance too, but one thing he never did was to
claim any one girl. I'm glad he did not leave a sweetheart."
"Often after evening chores were done, with the sun setting in the west, he would
pick up his guitar or fiddle and sometimes his harp, all of which he played by ear,
and sitting on the steps of the porch, would play and sing, accompanied by his
father and three younger sisters. Hazel and Francis would sing soprano and Bernice,
the youngest, would chime in with alto."
The mother paused for a moment as though she was seeing her four children together
again just as they used to be.
"School meant nothing to Edwin. Joining the navy was his life ambition and he stayed
in school only long enough to graduate from Schley county high school."
"He worked in Americus fifteen months, after his graduation, at the Manhattan Shirt
Factory as a box labeler, but the urge of the sea was too great. He enlisted in the
navy in April, 1940."
"He was really happy then," the mother admitted. "We first heard from him during his
training in Norfolk, Virginia. Later a letter came from the submarine school in New
London, Connecticut."
"Through with his training, my boy left for the west coast and Pearl Harbor, serving
on the submarine, Shark, in which he went to Manila," she added, unmistakable pride
in her voice.
"Later Edwin was transferred, as first class seaman, to the U.S.S. Canopus, a
submarine supply ship, and we received his last letter while he was on this
assignment."
Turning to her daughter, Frances, she asked her to bring out Edwin's pictures.
"Here is his picture in that old sweater with the holes in it ..... and this is the
one in his new overalls with no patches. Now this is his latest picture taken with
his buddy, John Murray Worsham, of Camilla, Georgia, also missing. You know I never
saw him in his uniform. He must have looked nice."
She dried her eyes. "I just can't believe Edwin is dead for sometimes I feel certain
he will come home."
Mr. Wall, a solidly built farmer, of Hopewell community, in his late forties, smiled
a greeting as he sat down on his front steps. His service in the First World War,
one could see had left its mark.
"Kate, my wife, you know works down in Americus at the Manhattan Shirt Factory," he
drawled, "and so does Hazel, our oldest girl." "They've just gotten home. Edwin
worked down there too til he joined the navy," he went on as he idly played with a
little yellow kitten that sought attention.
"I'm raising some cows for beef this year," he continued conversationally, "got
Twenty-five calves and yearlings, but I've plenty of
pasture for twice as many. We've about two dozen hogs too, though some are mighty
small," he smiled, as eight tiny pigs came into view behind a young sow.
"We've two mules and enough chickens for the family to eat," he added, staring
absently up at the roof.
"You know, sometimes I doubt if my boy will ever come home," he went on, "but I'm
not sorry he went 'cause that is the way he would want it."
The sun sank low over the pine tops in the distance and the blue star on the local
service flag, representing Thomas Edwin Wall, Seaman 1st Class, U.S.N., soon may be
replaced by a gold star.

"...sometime after their youngest son was born in 1875, grand pa Jack
remarried Lizzie Pursay Barfield may have had a sister Clair Johnson married a Barfield
in this area and had two sons Willis and Sidney Barfield, cant find, wonder if
she was kin to aunt Emma Worsham's husband Frank Robert Barfield, anyway, she
was called Aunt Puss, when they married, or a short while after my grand pa John W.
{then known as John Collier Worsham} left home and took Aunt Julie Worsham
latter Mrs. George {Ned} McDonald, and uncle Robert Edgar with him, and went to
live said Aunt Emma, or his sister, when Edgar was abt 12 yrs. old or less, and
with the help of Aunt Emma he raised them, at the time he came to live with
them, John W. slept on a newly picked pile of cotton on the porch. He took
Edgar with him while he went to pick cotton, some said he also took Aunt Julia.
but he picked cotton, cut cord wood and did what he had to to raise them,
latter when Lizzie P Barfield Worsham had a son and named him Collier, my grand
pa changed his name from John Collier Worshan to John W. Worsham and latter to
Wishum, he also latter changed his birth day from 1872 to 4 July 1874 so they
could celebrate the 4th, and lay by of the crops, and his birthday, and get the
family together at the same time. … so you can see there was a family
crisis at the time, we thought that g grand pa jack moved up to Americus or
that Collier did … I don't know when ggpa Dan went back to Taylor Co but it
was some time before 1910, it was said he was setting on the front porch, one
evening, and looking way off, said I sure wish I was back in old Taylor co,
tonight and sometime after he went back, my grandpa didn't go to the funeral,
but his son, Ambrous, hired some to take him in a T Model Ford abt 1910, said
they pushed it most of the way, because of wet clay roads, my mother thought
grand ma Julie Johnson Worsham was bur. Near Sheep Hold Hill between Sylvester
and Dole Ga in Worth co but I couldn't find her grave although I remember going
to a farm where grand pa lived when I was abt age 7 where he must have moved
shortly after him lost the old home place in the Bowen community and Hobby
settlement."

"short while after my
grand pa John W. {then known as John Collier Worsham} left home and took Aunt
Julie Worsham latter Mrs. George {Ned} McDonald, and uncle Robert Edgar with
him, and went to live said Aunt Emma, or his sister, when Edgar was abt 12
yrs. old or less, and with the help of Aunt Emma he raised them, at the time
he came to live with them, John W. slept on a newly picked pile of cotton on
the porch. He took Edgar with him while he went to pick cotton, some said he
also took Aunt Julia. But he picked cotton, cut cord wood and died what he had
to raise them, latter when Lizzie P Barfield Worsham had a son and named him
Collier, my grand pa changed his name from John Collier Worshan to John W.
Worsham and latter to Wishum he also latter changed his birthday from 1872 to
4 July 1874 so they could celebrate the 4th, and lay by of the crops, and his

The Nebraska State Journal (Lincoln,
Nebraska) 9 Apr 1949:
Atlanta- Now a lady first
baseman, on an otherwise all-male baseball team. The first
basewoman is Mrs Vester Wisham, wife of a farmer living near Rochelle, Ga. She plays
first for the Rochelle team in the South Georgia Peanut league.
She played for six years on a woman's professional team in Chicago area, before
moving to Georgia. Mrs Wisham bats and throws lefthanded. And she wears the
regulation uniform.
Mary Nesbitt was one of the first players in the AAGPBL. She shared some of her
memories with the AAGPBL:
1) How did you get
interested in playing baseball and where did you play before you turned pro?
I've played ball ever since
elementary school. On all the school teams. All state teams. Went to nationals at 14
in Chicago, again to nationals in Louisville at 65 (yes, 65). This was fast-pitch
softball. Playing in the pro league - we were converted to baseball which was right
down my alley.
2) Describe your signing.
No big deal about signing
our contract. I was excited for sure. I thanked God for being at the right place at
the right time.
3) What position(s) did you
play? Which teams did you play for?
I was a pitcher for the
Racine Belles for three years, first base for the Peoria Redwings for three years.
4) What was the best thing
about playing pro ball?
We made lots of friends. At
home games we were always invited to family homes for meals and fellowship. A chance
to travel, each team had a team bus after the first year.
5) What was the worst thing
about playing ball?
We had to travel by train
the first year. We were still at war and the military had priority, so we sat on the
end of our suitcases in the aisle. We didn't complain, we passed the time by playing
cards.
6) What was the highlight
of your career?
Winning the 1943
Championship with the Racine Belles as a pitcher. Hitting a grand slam in Peoria with
the Redwings. Over 10,000 fans present. The stadium behind my picture was the home of
the Peoria Redwings.
7) Who were the best
players you played with or faced? Comments?
Sophy Kurys - Second base
for the Belles - Led league in stolen bases
Irene Hickson - Catcher for
the Belles - She and I were referred as the Chattanooga battery - we were scouted
there.
All the Belles were great
players.
Dottie Collins was a great
pitcher for the Ft. Wayne Daisies.
8) Do you think the fans
and press accepted you more as the years wore on? (Describe how it was when you
started. Did increased exposure change some minds?)
At first everyone was
curious as to what we could do. After a few games the crowds began to increase. We
proved our point.
9) Who were your favorite
big league ballplayers during the era you played in?
The Babe - we were playing
one night (I was pitching) when over the loudspeaker it was announced that Babe Ruth
had passed away. The crowd and players stopped for a moment of silence. It was very
touching. I was a fan of Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Joe D.
10) Do you follow big
league ball now? If so, how do you think it compares with your day?
Yes, I'm a Braves fan. We
played in skirts - I had my share of strawberries. There was no radar to check our
speed, no batting gloves. No such thing as TV. It was radio and newspapers.
11) Should women have their
own pro league, should they play in the majors, or should we have both (a women's
league and the chance for the best women players to play in the majors?)
There are some women's
baseball leagues. I don't know if they're pro or not. Our league has endorsed the
schools to let the girls have baseball teams. You see the girls playing on little
league teams with the boys. When the girls get to the ninth grade they are pushed on
the fast-pitch softball teams and most want to play baseball. More power to them.
12) How do you feel about
the Silver Bullets?
They had a good thing
going. I haven't heard anything about them for a long time. More power to them if
they're still active.
13) Briefly describe your
life since your pro career ended.
I married Mr. Wisham. We
settled here in Hollister. We raised two boys and two girls - all grown. I retired as
a school bus driver after 22 years. Mr. Wisham retired from Georgia Pacific (26
years). When my youngest started school I went back to playing ball. This time it was
fast-pitch. I was still playing at 68. Mr. Wisham and I had 52 years together. He
passed away in 1998. I'm still very active, throwing out first pitches at ball games.
Just celebrated my 80th birthday.
14) What advice do you have
for young women who want to become pro ballplayers?
Play every chance you have.
You have to become dedicated. You eat, sleep and breathe baseball.
15) Any other memories or
comments?
I've always said I was at
the right place at the right time. I had just graduated from high school in 1943 when
I was scouted by a scout sent out by Mr. Wrigley. His name was Jimmy Hamilton. I was
the only girl on a mans' softball fast-pitch team when he approached me about the
league. I had to go for a two-week tryout at Wrigley Field. I was assigned to the
Racine Belles for three years and then to Peoria for three years. The Lord has kept
me healthy all these years and I am grateful.
May 1, 2005, Florida will play its last regular season home games on Tuesday. The
Gators will take on Florida State in a doubleheader at 1:30 pm at the Florida Softball
Stadium. Mary Nesbitt Wisham, the inspiration for the character Kit in the movie "A
League of Their Own" will attend the game as a representative of the All-American Girls
Professional Baseball League. She will have a display of memorabilia from her time in
league.
May 26, 2007 St Augustine Record:

Wisham played six seasons in the All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League as
a pi tcher.
by PETER WILLOTT Mary Nesbitt Wisham's baseball card.
When Mary Nesbitt Wisham
wraps her hands around a baseball bat, the years begin to fall away, and the girl who
played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the 1940s comes
smiling through. And, before you ask, she's none of the girls portrayed in the movie
"A League of Their Own." Although, like Kit in the movie, she pitched the winning
game. "She was the pitcher for the Racine Belles in the movies. I was the pitcher for
the real game for the real Racine Belles in real life. I can always say I relate to
her," Wisham said. "I say that movie was 80 percent correct," she said. The rest she
calls "made up," mostly to provide laughs. She credits the 1972 Equal Opportunity Act
and the movie with bringing the women's baseball league out of obscurity and
eventually having them saluted at the Cooperstown, N.Y., Baseball Hall of Fame.
"There are less than 300 of us left. We're dying off. I've always said my goal is
(age) 100. My aunt is 97," said Wisham, now 82. It's her aunt, Marie Harrell, who
gave her the push to go try out in Chicago after Jimmy Hamilton scouted her in
Chattanooga, where she was on a men's fast-pitch team. "I was the only girl playing,
but I was the pitcher," Wisham said. "He came up and introduced himself to me. He
told me what Mr. Wrigley was wanting to do to start a ladies league, but he stressed
the femininity." They wanted Nesbitt, as she was known then, to go up to Chicago for
a two-week tryout. "At first, I was kind of timid," she recalled. What she knew about
Chicago came from a crime show on the radio about a detective who fought the
underworld in Chicago. "That's all I'd ever heard about it," she said. "That's what
scared me." Her aunt convinced her to give it a try. Mary Wisham has always loved
baseball. When she was a little girl, her grandmother would walk her to school and
carry her books. Wisham carried her bat and ball. Baseball and Mary were a natural
fit. She played ball from elementary school on up, in sandlots and on teams -- school
and all-state. Her tryout in Chicago on Wrigley Field was a success, and she became
pitcher for the Racine Belles. She was 18. Before she could play, she had lessons to
learn. Philip Wrigley, who owned the chewing gum company and inherited the Chicago
Cubs major league baseball franchise from his father, wanted to keep the sport
thriving during World War II. Many minor league teams suffered from manpower shortage
during the war, and the idea of women playing ball in the Major League parks was
born. Wrigley and other businessmen in the venture wanted the girls to be ladies. "We
had to learn to walk down stairs with books on our heads, crossing our legs at the
ankles, sipping from a teacup," she remembers. In addition to charm school, the girls
learned how to apply and wear make-up. That was a pain, especially when trying to
keep the lipstick on when wiping off the sweat. Uniforms designed for the women
continued the feminine touch -- they were one-piece with a short skirt flared like
those for figure skaters. Chaperones were part of the team as well, and the girls
were taught how to deal with the public and fans in order to promote the league. The
first year of the League, teams traveled by trains on which servicemen had priority
for seats. Wisham remembers how the players would sit on their luggage in the middle
of the aisles, take out cards and play as the trains raced along the tracks. Buses
were in use by the next year. She was a pitcher for the Racine Belles for three years
(1943-45) and was winning pitcher for the 1943 Championship, which was, basically,
the World Series for the league. She was one of four pitchers for the Belles, and
they were used in rotation, which meant she only got to hit once every four games. "I
was always hitting, but as a pitcher you don't get to bat every day. I was always on
base and making home runs," she said. A left-handed pitcher, she had a 26-13 record
and pitched 308 innings in 1943. When she went to the Peoria Redwings, she played
first base for three years (1947-50). "I'm left-handed, so I'm a natural for first
base. I could play every day. I stayed in the top 10 among the batters," Wisham said.
That year, sandwiched between her years with the Belles and the Redwings, was spent
in Georgia -- after she married Vester Wisham, who worked for the Racine team. They
were working a farm when a scout was sent out to find her and see about coming back
to play in the league again. She had been playing on a men's team ("We played in a
peanut field.") The scout paid her a $500 bonus. "That was like $5,000 then," she
said. Her strongest memory was the night she hit her grand slam while playing in
Peoria. There were 10,000 spectators watching the game. She remembers spring training
in places like Opalaka and Daytona Beach and even once in Cuba "before Castro." She
quit baseball again in 1950, pregnant with her first child, David. Fans gave her a
baby shower on the field. The Wishams moved to Hollister in Putnam County after
learning there were six acres and a house for sale. She did return to play for three
months for a team in Miami, but it never caught on as it had in the Midwest. By 1954
the Girls Professional League was over. "It all broke up," Wisham said. "The men made
cracks about putting us back in the kitchen. But we're still going. "A lot have
passed away, and others are in nursing homes. A lot of the ladies never married. Our
players went on to teach, be doctors and lawyers." She and her husband were married
for 52 years, until his death in 1998. They raised four children. She didn't give up
playing ball, joining in with local women's leagues. Her daughter, Mary Elizabeth,
joined her, and they were part of the team that won the state championships for
fast-pitch softball in 1975. They finished ninth at the national championship. "They
called us the Cinderella team. Nobody had ever heard of us, and for several games we
just beat everybody," she said. She was 65 when she played in that championship
tournament in Louisville, Ky. For more than 20 years she drove a school bus in Putnam
County. A teacher at one of the schools handed her a magazine in 1988 and said she
needed to read an article. That's how she found out league members were being sought
for special ceremonies at Cooperstown. It reconnected her and other league members,
and they keep up these days through letters and the Internet. She's attended several
of the reunions. The other day she was a speaker at the Putnam County Historical
Society, signing baseball cards and talking about her playing days. She was a hit,
running into a man she pitched against when they played in the Azalea Bowl during her
softball league days. "I didn't recognize him, but he said we beat them," she said.
Another man said he had been portrayed in the movie. A couple of children wanted
their picture taken with her. The week before, she was a guest at the annual sports
banquet for the county. "They've already asked me to be back next year," Wisham said.
A recreation complex in West Putnam has been named in her honor. Mary Wisham still
loves baseball. "We're Braves fans, and we're Gator fans," she said. Her son, Todd,
who is emotionally handicapped, still lives with her, and they enjoy watching the
games on television. Mary Wisham probably only has one regret about her playing days
in the League. Her aunt, grandmother and father all got a chance to see her play, but
not her mother. "I wish she could have seen me," she said.
