1.5.5.2.2.3A.5A.5. Peyton Baker Washam b 8 Nov 1875 Union City, Obion, TN. Delete the reference to his wife Miss. Hardcastle. Peyton is a widow in the 1900 census living with his sister and his father, Anderson Washam, lives next door. There is a grandson of Anderson Washam living with him named Joe Washam b Nov 1892.
Nancy Zacchetti, 2000, wrote the:

"Social Security Administration for Joseph Washam's application. He is the grandson listed on the census living with Anderson Washam. The application states that he is the son of Dorothy Clipper and "Anison" Washam. Joseph's SS application has his date of birth as 10-20-1894, Mayflower, AR and his age as 47."

Anderson's older male children died before Joseph was born. We assume the father is Peyton Baker Washam and “Anison” is Anderson, his grandfather who he lived with as a child. Therefore, Peyton married Dorothy Clipper abt 1891 and Joe is their child. Dorothy died before 1900, since Peyton is widowed.
Child of Peyton & Dorothy:

Dec 31, 1998, Linn Washam looks back at ups, downs of mayor ship, By JOHN MAGSAM, Log Cabin Staff Writer:

MAYFLOWER -- Linn Washam is cleaning out his desk after 10 years in city government, the last four as mayor. Linn Washam Defeated in a general election bid for another term as mayor, his administration took shots for being secretive and non-responsive to the demands of an awake and sometimes angry constituency. But Washam doesn't act like a man in the cross-hairs. He's soft-spoken, has a firm handshake, sports an almost ever-present cap, and has an easy-going manner that borders on laid back. On Tuesday he sat behind his desk in a spartan office, drinking coffee from a smiley-face mug and smoking a cigarette. "It's been a good four years," he said, leaning back in his chair. "We've had some growing pains and it was those pains that got me defeated." Washam lost the mayor's seat in the general election, coming in a distant third behind independent candidates Ed Babin and Frank Pearce. Pearce later won a runoff election. "I had some people that worked against me and I had one person in particular ... and in some cases it was personal. He worked against me in council meetings. He worked against me with his newsletter," said Washam. He was referring to Babin, an outspoken alderman and his harshest critic. "But in some ways it was a blessing. I'd like to thank the people of Mayflower for voting me out." Focal point This mayor has been the focal point for several incidents that have pulled Mayflower into the limelight in the past few years. His administration was accused of racial discrimination and sued by Sammy Acosta, a former employee and member of the city's volunteer fire department. During that federal trial, Washam admitted to using racial slurs but, he said, only in "a joking manner." Washam admits the publicity from the lawsuit hurt the city's reputation and was a heavy blow against his administration. Asked if he is a racist, Washam replied, "No sir, I'm not. We all hit this ground equal and we leave it equal. ... I didn't judge him (Acosta) by his race. I did make that kidding remark one time. ... I won't lie about it." The mayor was also accused of supporting a ritzy land development that will abut some 50 acres of his own property and hauling shale to his brother's property outside the city limits in city vehicles. The most recent complaints were from Babin, who claimed he found Washam and two other aldermen in the midst of a secret meeting. Prosecutor H. G. Foster's investigation into the incident determined a violation of the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act did occur but he declined to pursue any formal charges. To Washam, these instances were bound to happen as Mayflower grew from a small, sometimes overlooked community to one of the thriving cities in Faulkner County. Water is the key, according to the mayor, and now that Mayflower has good, clean Greers Ferry Lake water from the Community Water System Inc., he predicts a residential boom, followed by commercial services to support the growing population. "I talk to people in this office almost every day who are deciding when they're going to come into Mayflower. We've just started this journey, we've got the first step or two done. In the next 10 years, there's going to be a bunch of steps made." Politics Washam first waded into politics in 1989, when he won a seat on the city council. He was elected mayor in 1994 and served one four-year term. While Washam is openly critical of Babin, he says every council needs someone brave enough to buck the status quo. But, he adds, that person has to keep personalities and egos out of the argument. Washam points out that, while Babin's constant sniping was difficult to deal with, the council itself never took action to support either Babin or the mayor, leaving them both twisting in the wind. "I think that's been a downfall of the city over the last four years -- the cooperation of the council," he said. "They didn't do any research. Every issue was new news to everyone." Washam, 57, lives on Highway 365 and has made his living as a trucker for 34 years. He is a Mayflower native and a graduate of Mayflower High School. "Right now, with my wife's health the way it is; and my farms -- trying to get hay out of the field -- and I've got a grandson to raise. I feel I've done all I think I can do for the City of Mayflower," he said. Washam says incoming mayor Pearce is a good man who will have an adjustment period when he finally takes his place in the mayor's seat. If he could give the new mayor some advice, Washam said he would tell him: "Work with your council real close, because they'll make you or break you. As far as being a good mayor or a bad mayor, your council will be the ones who do it for you."
