A. WASHAM, a prosperous farmer near Mayfield, Graves Co, Kentucky, is a
representative citizen of the county and state. He is a native Kentuckian, and
has lived in the state all his life. Beginning his career with an abundance of
nothing but strength of body and purpose to succeed, he has progressed with
the years, and can now claim a fair and creditable amount of success in his
special line of endeavor. He has lived consistently with his ideas of right,
and has given his best efforts to the accomplishment of his ideals and the
duties which came to his lot. Family, home, his farm, citizenship and
religious, educational and social affairs have each received their due share
of attention and effort, and the result is a well rounded individual and a man
esteemed where ever known.
Mr. Washam's grandfather, Peter Washam, b in the state of Virginia, whence
he removed to Marshall Co, KY, where his son Isaac b, and where the latter has
made his home all his life, being a substantial and well known farmer of that
vicinity. For sixteen years he was a magistrate in the eighth district of
Marshall Co, and was also deputy clerk of the county. During the Civil war he
espoused the side of the Union, and in 1862 enlisted in the Fifteenth Kentucky
Cavalry and served during the remainder of the war. He was once taken
prisoner, and was confined in Fort Hyman. He has been a Republican in
politics, and he and his wife are members of the Methodist church. He married
Mary P. Ray, who was also born in Marshall county, and was a daughter of Hix
J. Ray, a native of NC and of English descent. She is deceased, but her
husband still enjoys fair health at the age of sixty-five years. They had a
family of twelve children: Willis A.; William O.; Lucella M., wife of John
Mathews is; John A.; James B.; Thomas K.; Benjamin C.; Fayett H.; Mary F.,
deceased, wife of D. Reed; Annie E., wife of Nelson Owens; and twins that died
in infancy.
John A. Washam b in Marshall Co, KY, August 3, 1862, and after his early
training and schooling he started out to make farming his life work. He has
been steadily engaged in this line of enterprise all his life, and from
nothing, through his good management, hard work and thrift, has become the
owner of a fine farm of eighty-six acres on the Wadeborough road, two and a
half miles from Mayfield. Mr. Washam is a Republican in politics, and he and
his wife are members of the Methodist church. October 21, 1885, he married
Miss Susan Smith, who b in Marshall county, Kentucky, and is a daughter of
James K. P. and Elizabeth (Lyles) Smith, who were both born in Marshall
county, and are still living, in Graves county, the former aged fifty-eight
years and the latter fifty-nine. Martin Lyles was the maternal grandfather of
Mrs. Washam, and Rachael Wyatt Lyles, her paternal grandmother, b in North
Carolina, and at the age of six years moved to Marshall county, and is still
living at the age of seventy-three, making her home with her son. Mrs. Washam
is one of thirteen children, as follows: John W., Susan C., Thomas W., Nancy
A., Mary E., Tina E., Ellword A. (deceased), Henry E., Nina H. (deceased),
Hardin L. and Mont E. (twins), Kirk (deceased), and Early L. Mr. and Mrs.
Washam have had the following children: Weslie C. (deceased), Carrie M.,
Clemie A., James C., Omer F., and Ransom B.”
1.5.5.2.2.1A.5.7. Benjamin
Calvin Washam. From Graves Co, KY Newspaper abstracts:
30 Aug 1907: Mr. B. C. Washam,
sick 2 weeks, able to be on streets again. His family has all been sick.
1907: Ben Washam has returned
from a visit to his family at Murray. He says his children had grown so large and fat
from getting plenty to eat that he scarcely knew them. He decided to let them remain
there for a while longer.
24 Sep 1907: Pandemonium
reigned in the Mayfield Post Office Sat. Morning for quite awhile. The big Democratic
rooster of Judge Hocker a very nervy fowl, walked in the back door of the post office
and crowed three times in a loud, shrill voice, which indicated a Democratic victory at
the Nov. election. Wallace Key, the big postmaster, Dick Boaz, the man at the window,
Jerry Mason, the man at the desk and 12 rural carriers all turned pale as death and
wondered what it all could mean. The cock crowed again and it seemed for awhile there
was no one in the house who had the nerve to drive the emblematic bird of liberty away
from the door. Finally Ben Washam drew his pistol, Norvice Harper picked up his double
barreled shotgun, Wallace Key leveled his cannon & the bird, seeing his danger, took
his flight over the fence with Ben Washam leading the gang swearing vengeance such
audacity.
12 Dec 1907: Ben Washam one of
our rural mail carriers, has been at home several days complaining of rheumatism, while
his wife has been carrying the mail on his route. His little boy was heard to say Sat.
morning that his father enjoyed life better at home with rheumatism than if he were well
and carrying the route. From what the Messenger knows of him, the boy has got him down
about right.

following article was found, author not identified:
On Oct 25, 1918, Lawrence
Lee Jones jumped out of bed and began his morning rituals in preparation for his day
at school, McFerrin College, Martin, Tennessee, where his calling to the Methodist
ministry had led him. After school, he would report to Uncle Samuel Holcomb's Produce
Company where he would work several hours to earn a very meager living for his wife,
Ruth Washam Jones, and son, Thomas Crawford Jones. Having married in 1914, Ruth had
already given birth to a son, Edgar Earnest, who died shortly after birth, then to
Thomas (Tom) and now was expecting her third child in four years. It was their fourth
anniversary when Lawrence asked Ruth, before he left for school, what she wanted for
an anniversary present. Her reply was "A little girl." And that is what she
got, Virginia Ruth Jones.
