"Virginia Revolutionary Records Selected Final Pension Payment Vouchers 1818-1864" abstracted by Alycan F. Pierce, p 635, 1837, Wm Worsham of Prince Edward Co, VA Court satisfied that the pensioner died leaving no widow but children: Margaret J the wife of Mathew Anderson of NC. On 7 Apr 1837 in Rockingham Co, NC Margaret J. Anderson, another child of the pensioner appoints Benjamin J. Baldwin attorney to collect her share. On 5 May 1837 B J Baldwin collected $19.82.

"Elizabeth Picket (or Puket), Edward Picket, Nancy Worsham & Mrs. Pickets Harry...appear before the Judge...and give evidence on behalf of the State in a certain matter of controversy in our said court depending, wherein The State plaintiff and Holey a Slave the property defendant...."

Joyce "Jackie" Schrick, 67, of St. Peters, died Sat (July 31, 2004) at her residence. Ms. Schrick had worked at Huck's Convenience Store in St. Peters for 18 years. Visitation is scheduled Wed at Baue Funeral and Memorial Center, 3950 West Clay Street, St. Charles. A funeral service will be held Thur at Baue. Burial will be at St. Charles Memorial Gardens, 3950 West Clay Street. Among the survivors are four daughters, Vieann Bruemmer and Sharon Keathley, both of Florissant, Mandy Rinkle of Oakland, Ore., and Debbie Hammer of St. Peters; her mother, Azelea Worsham of Hillsboro; a sister, Vicki Sellers of Salem, Ill.

Virginia Oakley, 2001, writes: Harriet lived in Missouri during her first marriage and the oldest child of Lewis Oakley and Arra Worsham was born in Missouri, according to the 1850 census. He & Dicey died in Mecklenburg Co., NC leaving wills. Descendants lived in Mecklenburg Co., NC; Taney Co., MO; Greene Co., MO; Bradley Co., TN; Boone Co., AR; Tarrant Co., TX; Bosque Co., TX; Dallas Co., TX; Nolan Co., TX; Lincoln Co., OK; McMinn Co., TN; One of his descendants was Willis Washam who was hanged for the death of on of his child in 1854 in Greene Co., MO. (Page 356)

1.5.4.3.2.1.1. Willis Washam. "Jabez Ragland was on the jury that tried Willis Washam and sentenced him to be hung in Springfield in 1854. Willis was the first man to be legally hung in Greene County.  Ora Towsend Smith has stated her father, William Tulle Townsend, told her that Jabez Ragland, thinking to impress on his boys the importance of obeying the law, took him, age eight, and John Thomas, age six, to witness the event. The youngsters promptly went home and hung their younger sister, Mary, who was then four years old. A negro slave rescued her before she was harmed." 1.5.4.3.2.1.1.1. William Jeremiah Washam b abt 1822 Cabarrus Co, NC m Amanda Mariah Benton 27 Aug 1845.  Hattie Crumby, 2002 wrote:

"All dates I have were given to me by my Mother, written in her own hand. She got the information from her mother, Sarah Amanda Washam. ... Sarah Lee Washam's parents were Jeremiah Washam b 1822 SC d maybe in Denton Co, as they had come from Missouri to Denton Co, TX when Sarah Amanda was about 12 yrs. old. married Amanda M Benton b 1831 TN. They married Aug 27, 1845."

1.5.4.3.2.1.1.1.2. Thomas Calvin Washam "Caloway" m Lucindy Jane Higgins. Lucinda and several of her children are buried in Rendon Cemetery in Rendon, Tarrant Co, TX. According to Mansfield Historical Society, Nov 11, 2001:

"The area where the present Rendon Cemetery stands was deeded to the community by W.L. Norwood in 1897. The first grave is disputed to be either Elizabeth (Lizzie) Huston, a member of the Washam family, or as another source reports, the grave of a baby resting under present F.M. 1187. The early care of the cemetery was accepted by the citizens of the community as their responsibility. Most were farmers and would take a day off from their duties to have a general cleaning when necessary. Later, interested people formed a cemetery association. It was organized on May 29, 1955 at the Retta Baptist Church. In 1957, the Association decided to raise funds for a fence around the cemetery and in 1964, at a total cost of $1,085.50 the project was complete. Today, the cemetery had reached near its capacity and it had become necessary to close it. Many pioneer spirits were laid to rest in the Rendon Cemetery."

In the 1880 Bosque Co., TX Census, ED 14, p 2, Maggie Stewart, a widow, was living alone near Amanda Washam. Harrison R. Hutson "Harry" m 2nd) Maggie Stewart 29 Jun 1882 Tarrant Co., TX. Harry b 22 Dec 1844 Bradley Co. TN s/o Francis Hutson and the grandson of Armstead Hutson, the old Washam family friend from Bradley Co., TN. Harry is believed to have been a scout for the Confederate Army and was also rumored to have be jailed during the Civil War. Harry d 25 Aug 1912 in Johnson Co., TX & bur in Baker Lain Cemetery. Maggie was living with her son-in law, Thomas P. Geurin in the 1920 Berwyn, Carter Co., OK Census, ED 49, p 6B. She is 63 years old and a widow. She could not read or write. Maggie d 1924, age of 68 and bur in Berwyn, Carter, OK. According to Sallie Washam's will (husband of Cam Washam, Maggie's brother) she had a daughter named Mary Jo Stewart.

2. Jessie Hutson b 13 Jan 1888 TX & m Thomas J. Guerin abt 1908. Thomas b 27 Oct 1882. Her 63 year old mother, Maggie was living with them in 1920 on Ardmore Road in Berwyn, Carter, OK, ED 49, p, 6B. He d 23 Feb 1942 & she d 27 Jul 1979 Ardmore, Carter, OK & bur in Berwyn Cem., Gene Autry, OK. 

3. Pink Hutson b 7 Apr 1890 TX. He never married and was in the U.S. Army during World War I as a private. He d 22 Nov 1957 Johnson Co., TX & bur Baker Lain Cem. 

4. Lena May Hutson b May 1892 TX. 

5. Charlie Hutson b 1894 TX & m Catherine Fisher. Charlie d 1937 & bur Berwyn, Carter, OK.

1.5.4.3.2.1.1.1.2.6.  Alonzo Washam "Lon" was born 4 Feb 1883 Mansfield,  Tarrant Co, TX, died 10 Apr 1970 Roswell, NM. The son of Thomas Calvin Calloway Washam who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. The obit of his mother in law is in the Hereford Brand, Thursday, May 27, 1937:

"Grandma Smith Dies Tuesday – Funeral Services for Elizabeth Smith, 81, were held from Black Funeral Home Wednesday at 3:30 conducted by Rev. T.C. Willett pastor of the First Methodist Church assisted by Rev. W. A. McCann pastor of the Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Smith was born September 16, 1855 and came to Texas in 1869 settling in Hartley Co. She came to this county in 1936. She died in the hospital here Tuesday following an illness of 3 months. She was a member of the Methodist Church at New Castle, Texas and had numerous friends here. She is survived by three sons P. D. Smith Loco, Texas, Earl Smith Hartley, T. M. Smith Channing, one daughter Mrs. Lon Washam, Hereford, and two sisters.”

 

Lon, pictured, was the grandson of Willis Washam, the man hanged in Greene Co., MO.  Lon was a music teacher.  A tenor, he was one of the original members of the Stamps Quartet, noted gospel singers of the Southwest. He studied music under Victor Hebert and composed "I've Found a Better Way," that was featured in early Stamps Quartet song books.  His wife, Nancy Melvernia Smith "Vernia",  was born 14 Apr 1889 Harrold, Wilbarger Co, TX & died 20 Sep 1975 Roswell, NM.  Two pictures are Vernia, the daughter of Dudley Smith and Eliza Elizabeth Darwin. Her grandfather was Captain William Darwin who fought in the War of 1812. Her great grandfather, Captain John Darwin, fought in the Revolutionary War with General George Washington and quartered with Washington at Valley Forge during the winter of 1778. 1.5.4.3.2.1.1.1.2.5. Thomas James Washam. His obituary is in the The Weakly Herald, Thursday August 19, 1920:

"Millsap Doctor Commits Suicide Dr. T. J. Washam, one of the leading physicians at Millsap ended his life Thursday morning at 2:30 o'clock by shooting himself. The shot was fired through the head and death was instant. Dr. Washam with his family moved to Millsap about five years ago and had built up a good practice. He was well liked as a man and a physician, and his friends were surprised at his rash act. No cause has been assigned for the suicide. It is reported that the doctor had been depressed during the past few days. He was a native of this state, having been born and reared near Mansfield in Tarrant county. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mora. He is also survived by his father and a brother who live in Young county. Funeral arrangements are being delayed pending the arrival of his father."
