1.3.5.2.2.2.  William H Worsham b abt 1786 Prince Edward Co, VA.  “Virginia Revolutionary Records Selected Final Pension Payment Vouchers 1818-1864" abstracted by Alycan F. Pierce, p 635, 1837, Wm Worsham of Prince Edward Co, VA Court satisfied that the pensioner died leaving no widow but children: William H. Worsham of GA.  William H Worsham m 1st) Elizabeth Price, d/o Jacob, 27 Dec 1808 Prince Edward Co, VA.  William H Worsham m 2nd) Sarah Walls 30 Jun 1822 Jackson Co, GA. (37000 Early GA Mrgs) Sarah b 7 Nov 1798 Jackson Co, GA d/o John & Susannah Walls. (Walls Bible, Claudine Putnam, 2004)  They are in the 1830 Gwinnett Co, GA cens, Wm. H. Worsham, 2m 10-15, 1m 40-50; 2 f <5, 1f 30-40, 1f 40-50.  There was a William Worsham from Monroe Co, GA who was a fortunate drawer of land in the 1832 Cherokee land lottery located in Cass Co, GA.  Family researcher, Patricia Worsham, believes that the William Worsham who made that draw never claimed the land and it went back to the state.  However, this connection ties Monroe Co, GA to Cass Co, GA through William Worsham.  Also, Cass Co, GA changed it’s name to Bartow Co in 1861 & Bartow Co adjoins Floyd Co.  In the Baldwin Co, GA Union Recorder newspaper clippings page 62 by Tod Evans, Vol III, 1837-1839 published by Evans in Savannah, GA, 1994, there was a letter remaining at the Post Office in Forsyth, Monroe Co, GA on 1st Jul 1837 for William Worsham.  There might be a connection to the John Worsham who was in the list of letters remaining in the Post Office at Forsyth, Monroe Co, GA on 1 Oct 1835, pg 237 of the Union Recorder newspaper clippings.  In the 1840 Forsyth Co, GA cens. (Gwinnett Co, GA borders Forsyth Co. & Cherokee Co separates Forsyth and Cass Co) is W. H. Worsham, p. 369, 3 m < 5, 1m 50-60; 1f < 5, 1f 5-10, 1f 10-15 & 1f 40-50.  In addition, William Worsham, is in the 1840 Cass Co, GA census with 10 children.  William Worsham b abt 1786 VA & Sarah b abt 1799 SC are in the 1850 Cass Co, GA census, p 166, age 64, house carpenter.  The family is discussed in the Pope Co, AR, Vol 2, Pope Historical Assoc, 1981, Joster's Pub, Topeka, KS. William H. & Elizabeth probably had a son (see page 783):

1.3.5.2.2.2A.1 William Bolton Worsham b 1815 VA & m 1st) Susan abt 1840. Susan b 1816 SC.  He is on the 1850 Gwinnett Co, GA Census, p 187. He m 2nd) Mary A Windsor who was b Aug 1841 GA.  Joanne Folsom, 2005, wrote:

"Mary's maiden name is from the final settlement of the will of her father, Anderson Windsor in 1910. (Book 20 page 8-11 ) The will was recorded in Gwinnett Co, Georgia 11 Mar 1886. (Will book D page 339-340) Anderson died Dec 1885. Anderson had six children by Clarissa Brown his first wife and three by his second wife Sarah. Mary Worsham is listed as one of the heirs of Anderson Windsor on the final settlement. She was the only child of the first marriage still living at that time. The three daughters by the second marriage were living, all the rest named were Anderson grandchildren."

William is on the 1870 Pinkneyville, Gwinnett Co. Census, p 10. (see page 783) Mary died 8 Aug 1929 in Chattooga Ga.

William & Sarah children:

1.3.5.2.2.2B.1. Sarah Worsham b abt 1829 of Cass Co, GA. (21-1850)  Miss. Sarah Worsham m W T Wilson 20 Apr 1879 Galla Rock, Pope Co, AR. (Galla Rock, Pope Co, AR Marriages, Bk E, p 293) She is age 35 & J T is age 40. There is connection between this Wilson family and the Worsham's. They were neighbors in the GA Census records in 1850 and 1860. They apparently migrated together from Cass Co, GA to Pope Co, AR. Two members of the Wilson family affirmed John E Worsham's service in the 60th GA in his AR Confederate Pension Application, saying that they had known him for 45 years and knew of his service. This Wilson family was from SC. In the 1880 Galla Rock, Pope, AR cens, is John T. Wilson, age 53, & wife Sarah, age 45 GA. Her father was b VA & mother b GA.

1.3.5.2.2.2B.2. John Elbert Worsham b 13 Jan 1832 of Cass Co, GA. (18-1850) He is probably in the 1860 Crawford Co, GA census living with Wm Burgy, as John Worsham age 27 SC, p896.

Pope Co, AR, vol II, Pope Co Historical Assoc, 1981, Josten's Publishing Co, Topeka, KS by Bertrand R Worsham:

"John Elbert who was one of General Jubal Early's troops who attempted to capture Washington, DC, was shot at Monocacy River, hospitalized at Frederick, Maryland and recovered and was in a prisoner of war exchange."

He m Amanda Melvina Tanner abt 1869 probably in Bartow Co, GA. Melvina b John_Elbert__Melvina_Worsham.jpg (20303 bytes)Jan 1852 GA. Another date of birth is 15 Feb 1855. (Pat Worsham, 1997) Her age varies with every census, her tombstone, and her death certificate. They probably moved to Pope Co between 1871 and 1875. Shirley Tanner McDonald, 1999, wrote: "My Great Grandfather was Alen Tanner and in the 1870 Bartow Co, GA cens. His first wife was Rachel Loudermilk. He was a RR worker according to the cens. He moved to Wood Co, TX. possibly with the RR. Sometime in the 1880's Rachel passed away and he came to AR where a lot of his family had moved from GA. He had a sister, Amanda Melvina Tanner Worsham."  It was said that John built three houses upon arrival in Galla Rock. He is age 42 in the 1880 Galla Rock, Pope Co., AR Census. The name Elbert is in the Pope Co History book by Bertrand. They were Methodist. Patricia Worsham believed this Tanner line was from Haralson Co, GA. Two of Melvina's brothers, Allen and Richard also migrated to Pope Co. Richard was a hemophiliac and Melvina was a carrier. Patricia Worsham suspects that some of the male Worsham children may have died young from this disease.

John E Worsham, claimed residence in Bartow Co, enlisted 25 April 1862, Private, served Georgia Enlisted H Co 60th Inf Reg. GA, (Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865). John E Worsham’s AR Confederate Pension Application places him with the Cass Co. Confederate group. AR Confederate Veterans & widows pension application lists John Elbert Worsham, widow Melvina, Co H 60 regiment GA I, 1862-65, app. 26 Aug 1901 in Pope Co, AR; deceased. 7/25/08. John E's AR Confederate Pension Application places him with the Cass Co Confederate group. John was wounded by a shot in the left side and part of a tree fell on his right arm. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Monocacy, MD. He was later send to Point Lookout POW camp and eventually was exchanged.

He d 26 Jun 1908, Pope, AR & she d 24 Sep 1921 Pope Co, AR. John & Melvina are bur in Bell's Chapel cemetery Pope Co, AR with their infant son Richard. The original tombstone for John E. shows "Born in Georgia." It has since been replaced. This family is in Pope Co, AR, vol 2, Pope Historical Ass, 1981, Joster's Pub, Topeka, KS.

1.3.5.2.2.2B.2.1.  William Henry Worsham b 16 Jan 1870 of Bartow, GA (9-1880) m Dona A Cooper 16 Aug 1894 Pope Co, AR.  She was b 8 Oct 1874 & d 18 Mar 1936 Pope, AR.  He d 27 Jun 1902 while fording Isabella Creek on mule back in Pope Co, AR.  Both are bur Shiloh Cem, Pope Co, AR.

1.3.5.2.2.2B.2.1.1.  Rose Clemie Worsham b 2 Jul 1895 Pope, AR m Dolan Burris abt 1917 Pope, AR & she d 19 Sep 1973 Pope, AR.  Dolan b. Dec 27, 1893, d 1 Aug 1997. Both bur. Shiloh Cem, Pope Co, AR.

1.3.5.2.2.2B.2.1.2.  George Leonard W Worsham b 30 Aug 1896 Pope, AR m 1st) Pauline Bridges & m 2nd) Catherine Gray, 1917.  He d 2 Nov 1967 of Conway Co, AR.  George & Catherine are in the 1920 Conway Co, AR census with her father, Wm. T. Gray.  George is bur. Shiloh Cem., Pope, AR.

Wilma was a real estate broker and loan closer until her retirement in 1976.  She d 9 Jun 1996, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, OK & bur Jun 12 Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Oklahoma City.

Pete Escamilla, 20091 wrote about Tempie:

One personal note ... she was a wonderful woman and a great grandmother to me.  She died when I was 13 but I still have all her letters and many memories of her and the everyday things we did together when I was a small child.

1.3.5.2.2.2B.2.2.  John Allen Worsham b Dec 1875 of Pope Co., AR m 1st) Helen Kelley 5 Nov 1899 Conway Co, AR.  It was an easier trip to Conway Co. Courthouse than to the Pope Co. Courthouse. In Bertrand's article, his middle name is Archer but on the social security application for his son Carl Lester Worsham, his name is Allen.  Allen Tanner was Melvina's brother and that may be where the name Allen came from.  He is listed as a carpenter in the 1900 census.  Helen b 8 Sep 1880 & d 24 Dec 1951 of Pope, AR.  He m 2nd) Julia Hillis.  John d 1952 North Little Rock, AR & bur there.  He was m several times but only the marriage to Helen yielded children.  John was a hemophiliac which he inherited from his mother Melvina, a carrier.  Since this is a sex-linked (X chromosome) trait, his sons did not inherit the disease, but his daughter Myrtle was a carrier.  Both of her sons were hemophiliacs.

BENTON - Lyman E. Worsham, 79, of Benton passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2006. He was owner of Central Photo in Benton for 33 years, a member of Parkview United Methodist Church, the North Little Rock Elks #1004, Pulaski Heights Masonic Lodge #673, Scimitar Shriners A.A.ONMS of Little Rock and the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Cox Worsham, of Benton ; daughter, Joyce Worsham Sheddy and fiancé Mike Hankins, of Knoxville, Tenn.; two beautiful granddaughters that he was very proud of, Madison and Morgan Sheddy and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Jean Worsham; two brothers, Bill and Lee Worsham and a sister, Helen Richards. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Shane Kimball and the nurses at Benton Dialysis Clinic.

1.3.5.2.2.2B.2.2.3.6. Helen Jo Worsham b 28 Apr 1930 of Red Fork, Tulsa, OK.  She m Billy Richards "Bill" 21 Aug 1946 Saline, Arkansas.  Helen d 27 Mar 2001 North Little Rock, Pulaski, AR & her obit appeared 5 Apr 2001: 

Helen Worsham Richards, 70 of North Little Rock, a member of Central Baptist Church in North Little Rock and a member of the Jewel Chapter of the Eastern Star where she was past worthy matron, died Tuesday, March 27. Survivors include her husband, Bill Richards; three daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Steve Morgan of Sherwood, Jo Ann and David Duke of Maumelle, Kathy and Doug Hatcher of Cabot; one brother and sister-in-law, Lyman and Mary Worsham of Little Rock and a sister-in-law, Tommie Worsham of North Little Rock. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Hatcher. Funeral services were held Friday, March 30, burial was at Edgewood Memorial Park.

1.3.5.2.2.2B.2.5. Emmett Lawrence Worsham b 7 Apr 1885 Pope Co, AR according to his Social Security application of Pope Co, AR. He m 1st) Rosy G. Vest 1905 Pope Co, AR. Rosie b abt 1885 Pope, AR. He m 2nd) Roxie Kelley of Pulaski, AR. In 1935 he lived in Little Rock, AR and was employed as a watchman. He died Nov 1964 Pope Co, AR & bur Bells Chapel Cemetery, Pope, AR.  

Sheriff17.jpg (23283 bytes)This picture was found on ebay, 2001. The ad proclaimed: "This is one wild looking sheriff, has that thousand yard stare. Photo is permanently mounted on an old metal frame. Frame measures 8" X 6". On the back is written, Everette Washam, Sheriff, Cotton Plant Arkansas, 1903-1909." I believe this is Emmett Lawrence Worsham who, in 1935, was a watchman in Little Rock, AR. His son, Emmett Leon Worsham, died May 1976 Cotton Plant, Woodruff, AR.

1.3.5.2.2.2B.3.  Robert Archer Worsham b abt 1835 of Cass Co., GA. (15-1850)  He m Sarah L. Turner 29 Dec 1858 of Wilkinson, GA d/o Ben Turner.  (Joy Hight, 1998)  Robert, age 25 GA, is in the 1860 Cartersville, Cass Co census as a laborer and m in the last year with one sister, S age 17 (probably wife) and two brothers, J 9 mos and J 27 yrs, living in dwelling #23A. (Jerry H Adams, 2000)  According to Paulding County, It's People & Places, Foster, 1983, p594:

Worsham, Robert Archer
Born in 1835, in what was then Cass County, Georgia. It is now known as Bartow County. He was the son of William and Sarah Smith Worsham; who obtained land in the 1832 Cherokee land lottery, and moved to Cass County from Monroe County, Georgia. Robert Archer Worsham was a private in the Civil War, joining with his brother John Elbert Worsham, April 25, 1862. They joined and left out of Cartersville, Georgia as members of Ga. 60th Inf. Co. H. Robert Archer married Sarah Turner before the war and had one son, John Archer Worsham. He was wounded and captured at Cedar Creek, Virginia, September 19, 1864. He was sent to Chimorazo Hospital, No.2, in Richmond, Virginia. He was transferred to Elmira Prison Camp December 16, 1865. He died April 8, 1865, of chronic diarrhea. He was buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery, Grave #2624.

His family is in the Pope Co, AR, v2, Pope Historical Ass, 1981, Joster's Pub, Topeka, KS.  He d. of Chronic Dysentery & was bur 9 Apr 1865 Woodlawn Nat'l Cem. (Gravestone # 2697)  Sarah applied for a widow's pension and gave the initial A. in the application.  The name Archer has not been confirmed according to Patricia Worsham.  Sarah gave the date of death as 1863 in the Civil War.  Sarah m 2nd) Richard O Finch 28 May 1872 Bartow, GA.  She is Sarah L. Finch born Jan 1843 GA, a widow, in the 1900 Adairsville, Bartow, GA census living with her son in law, Jesse S. Camp & daughter, Mollie L. Camp.

(My Grandfather and her husband, U.S. Adams, remarried and is buried (without his second wife) with his parents and a brother in Salem Church Cemetery in Bluffton, AL - again something I have personally verified. Jean was born in Rome on February 20, 1951, the daughter of the late Robert “Bob” and Lorena “Rene” Worsham. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, William “Bill” Worsham of Monroe and Stanley Worsham of Marietta and her husband, Dale Loveless of Rome.

Mr. John Allen Worsham, age 90, of Rome Georgia, John Allen Worsham.jpg (9750 bytes)went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept 4, 2005 after a very extended illness with Parkinson's disease. Mr. Worsham was preceded in death by his parents Mr. Samuel Worsham and Kindness Oswalt Worsham He was born Sept 29, 1914 in Bartow County, GA., grew up in Cedartown, GA. and spent most of his adult life in Rome. He married Helen Ruth Watson on June 16, 1942 Mr. Worsham was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling with his church group and was an avid fisherman. Until his illness, he was an active member of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church. He served with the US Army during World War II where he fought in Germany, France and Ireland, earning the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and numerous other medals. Mr. Worsham was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Pauline Wyatt, Ethel Gaylor and Charlotte Gable, one brother R.E. Worsham. Survivors include his wife, Helen Ruth Worsham; one daughter and son-in-law; Jeanette and Ken Duskey of Rome,GA.; one son and daughter-in-law; Wayne and Deborah Worsham of Cornelia, GA. three brothers; George Worsham of Pigeon Forge, TN., Douglas Worsham of Gatlinburg, TN. and Crotell Worsham of Cedartown, GA.; one sister Jean Johnson of Cedartown, GA.; four grandchildren Jeff Duskey of Cumming, GA. Kevin, Michael, and Tracy Worsham of Cornelia, GA. a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Wed Sep 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Shorter Ave Baptist Church with Reverend Gerald Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the church by 10:30 am and include, Jeff Duskey, Kevin Worsham, Michael Worsham, Bob Bagley, Ty Johnson and Mike Johnson.
Full military graveside rites will be conferred by the Shanklin-Attaway, Honor Guard, Post #5 of the American Legion.

Mrs. Worsham was born in Leesburg, Florida on August 27, 1921 the daughter of the late Devo and Emma Kennedy Watson. She had lived most of her life in Floyd County and was a member of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church. Mrs. Worsham worked for Advance Glove Manufacturing for several years. She loved cooking, taking care of her family, was a loving mother and wife. She enjoyed traveling with church groups. Mrs. Worsham was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Worsham on September 4, 2005. Also preceding her in death where her parents, a brother, Robert Watson and three sisters, Ruby Vinson, Arleva Holloway and Geneva Douglas.
Survivors include, one daughter and son-in-law; Jeanette and Ken Duskey of Rome, GA.; one son and daughter-in-law; Wayne and Deborah Worsham of Cornelia, GA. four grandchildren Jeff Duskey of Cumming, GA. Kevin, Michael, and Tracy Worsham of Cornelia, GA; one brother, Bill Watson, Cedar Bluff, Al; one sister, Katherine Worsham, Duluth, GA; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Worsham will be held Friday at 4 pm at the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

Former Dothan Barber Bonded In Slaying Case.

E D GRANGER, former Dothan barber, is under $500 bond at Montgomery in the slaying of another barber, E. E. WIRSHAM, in a Montgomery barbershop Saturday afternoon, it was revealed here today. The shooting is reported to have been the outgrowth of a disagreement several days before when Granger was temporarily placed in charge of the barbershop during the absence of the owner. According to witnesses Granger pumped two pistol bullets into Wersham's chest after the latter had made a remark to Granger in an undertone. Earlier in the day, it was reported, Worsham struck Granger several times, knocking off his glasses.

“The Worsham Family Square, as it was called the Farmville paper on October 31, 1913, is about 32 feet by 32 feet. A map of the graves was drawn in 1866 by Branch Jones Worsham (I am guessing Jr. but don't know).  A copy of this map is in the Virginia Sate Archives among the papers of Dr. J. D. Eggleston  on the Worsham family.  The date and authorship of the map is taken from a letter to the widow of Branch Jones Worsham, III dated October 20, 1949.  The map shows 22 grave sites divided into four rows with seven graves in each row.  The numbering the graves is rather odd as you can see:

On the original map the graves are indicated by size.  Adult's graves are larger than children's.  Graves 1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14  are all smaller indicating that children are buried in them. 

 

1 and 2: I have no idea who John R. and Judith Williams are nor can I identify 20 R. Berkley. 

 

3: George Marshall was the son of Branch Jones Worsham, Sr. and his wife, Susannah Rochet Marot Booker (grave 6)  George was born 21 March 1827 and 

died 25 March 1827

 

4. William W. Worsham was the father of Branch Jones Sr.  He was born 16 June 1752 and died 27 August 1836 

 

5: Peggy Worsham was Margaret Jones, daughter of Robert Jones and his wife Sarah Mayo Scott of Amelia County, the wife of William and mother of 

Branch Sr.  She was born 18 November 1756 and died 4 October 1827 

 

6: Susanna R. M. Worsham was the wife of Branch Sr. She was born 26 March 1797 and died 14 May 1838 

 

7: Sarah M. Harvey may have been Sarah Mayo daughter of William and Peggy. 

 

8: Elizabeth B. Branch (middle name Branch too) was the daughter of William and Peggy.  She was married to her cousin William Branch on 11 

February  1802.

 

9: Elizabeth Worsham was the mother of William Worsham of whom the Richmond Inquirer of 22 February 1827 reported:  "Died at residence of Capt. William Worsham in Prince Edward County on the 1st, Mrs. Elizabeth Worsham in the 99th year of her age." 

 

10: Lucy Booker Worsham was the daughter of Branch Sr. and his wife Susanna 

 

Three of the graves numbered 11 - 14 may contain the remains of: 

 

Virginia Rebecca Worsham,  daughter of Branch Sr. and his wife, Susanna. Born 17 August  1835 and died 6 October 1832 

 

Emma Worsham daughter of Branch Sr. and his wife, Susanna.  Born 31 October 1835 and died 17 September 1837 

 

Elizabeth Hatton Worsham daughter of Branch Jr. and his wife Mary Mettauer Hatton.  Elizabeth was born 13 November 1877 and died 24 April 1878 

 

One of the graves for whom no name is given  is certainly occupied by Branch Jones Worsham, Sr. Born 18 December 1788, Died 26 May 1873.  Joseph Barrye Wall in an article on "Old Homes of Prince Edward" in Today and Yesterday writes of Branch Sr.'s final resting place:  "In the Worsham family grave yard, he was buried by the side of his father, William Worsham, a soldier of the Revolution." 

 

Others who may later  occupy the grave yard could be: 

 

Mary Mettauer Hatton Worsham, wife of Branch, Jr. Born 3 June 1851 and died 9 August 1878  (Their most unusual love story makes me believe she has to be there.) 

 

Branch Jones Worsham Jr. born 5 August 1833 and died 29 October 1913.  According to a notice in the Farmville Herald on Friday, October 31, 1913, he died in Williamsburg but was buried "in the family Square at Worsham." 

 

I believe that his was the last grave.  His oldest son, Branch III was buried in Bluefield, W. VA and his second son, my grandfather, John Mettauer Worsham, was buried in the Oak City Cemetery in Bainbridge, GA.  According to a death notice in the Decatur newspaper.  He died 15 February,1919.

They were in the 1880 Census of Prince Edward Co, VA. The home was named Woodlawn...it was near the railroad which ran from Prospect Depot to Farmville. Military had no direct appeal to him but a Christmas corporalship gave him a taste for chevrons, and a gold band together with the title of "Skipper" completed his military career. He became interested in Tech publications the latter part of his rat year and has continued to work in this field throughout college. The editorship of The Virginia Tech was his greatest achievement. But, not satisfied with this honor, he conceived the idea of establishing a new publication, called the V. P. I. Skipper. "The 1852 Script Act were papers which covered the last Bounty distribution for American Revolutionary War service. When Va. ceded her western lands to the new United States, she did so with a promise that all of the bounty lands in VA veterans would be honored. In 1852 there were still 800 claims, the Veteran was long dead, and most of his children, many of these show descent into the 4th and 5th generations.
