1.5.4.2.3.5. John Blankenship.

Vicky Sue Blankenship wrote 3 Mar 2008:

"Our family records indicate that John Blankenship was b abt 1799 and married Elizabeth Sheeks 27 Aug 1818 in Wayne Co KY. Wayne Co later became Russell Co Elizabeth b abt 1805. Her lineage is accounted for rather well through Mark Arslan. Literature is found listed under Sheek online. Some of our family says John was married to Martha McFall. I don’t know that for a fact one way or the other. Just Elizabeth Sheek. Some say that a John Blankenship b 1788 was married to Ancatron McFall called Catherine, which is true, but he is different than our John (of 1799). This is Hudson generation 3's son." (Hudson m Edith Wilkinson; therefore, John Blankenship who m Ancatron would be brother to Jesse Blankenship)

John Blankenship is listed in the 1850 Russell Co, KY census age 51 with wife, Elizabeth & children: Levy age 19; Nathan age 16; Elizabeth age 14; George age 11; Susan age 9; William J. age 7 & Luvina age 4. His father, Jesse Blankenship age 84 b VA is living with him. John is listed in the 1860 Russell Co, KY census. He is age 65 & wife Elizabeth is age 55. Elizabeth Blankenship is age 65 in the 1870 Precinct 2, Creelsboro, Russell Co, KY census living with her son, Ben Blankenship & his wife Mary.

In his obituary it was stated he was a member of Madison Presbytery & died of typhoid fever October 30, 1894, at his home near Craven’s Lodge, Hardin county, TN, after about four weeks’ illness. He had been in ministry fifty years. He professed religion at thirteen years of age and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Old Union; joined presbytery soon after, was licensed at eighteen, and ordained at twenty five years of age. He was born December 3, 1826. His father died when he was a small boy. He was reared by a widowed mother, who had several other children. January 15, 1855, (Obviously a typo since he and NLJ are on the 1850 census as husband and wife) he married Miss Louisa Jane Furguson who still survives him. All the children are now professors of faith. Brother Blankenship was for many years a mason. He was buried at Liberty, one of his congregations.

Bockstruck, a genealogist in Dallas, TX. ..."his conclusion was "probably Elizabeth Archer..."because: she was there, at the right time, in the right geographic area, and there was no differing record of marriage."

Charles & Elizabeth's first grandson was named Archer, his name could have come from her maiden name. Also see page 297.

1776 Mecklenburg Co, VA John Marshall and wife Rebecca of Parish of St. James sold to Edward Parish of Cumberland Co, VA 300 acres of land left to him by his father William (Rec'd from Jodie Gee 9/16/2000)

From Francis Moody, His Ancestors, Descendants & Related Families by Clara Park the following was written about John Marshall:

"John Marshall was the elder son of William Marshall (I). John Marshall and wife Rebecca were in Mecklenburg County, Va., prior to Dec. 1775 when John began negotiations to break the entailment on 300 acres of land in Cumberland County that John's father had erroneously bequeathed to the younger brother, William Marshall (II). Since John Marshall of Mecklenburg County "was seized as tenant in fee trail," John had to "break" the entailment before either he or William could dispose of the land (Cumberland Co, VA Deed Bk 5, pp 430,482) Here Mrs. Park stated "See Chapter 2, topic "Cumberland County Records" for details. See Pages 18-20. (Only have page 18 of Chapter 2 wherein Mrs. Park states, "In William Marshall's will dated October 2, 1768 he bequeathed to his last wife, Lucy Marshall, his rights to her plantation, her furniture, and four slaves, all of which she had inherited from her previous husband, Henry Clay, whose will was probated May 28, 1764. William Marshall's will stated that his rights to her property which he returned to Lucy were in lieu of her right of dower to my estate. He also gave Lucy a year's supply of pork and corn for her family.) In 1787 he (John Marshall) sold 300 acres to his brother-in-law, Arthur Moody (Mecklenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 7, p 97)

In May court of 1782 in Mecklenburg County ordered that John Marshall should be paid for supplying 400 c. weight beef for use of the Continental Army. Also in 1782 John Marshall's assessment for land tax in the Upper District was for 391 acres. In 1783 the personal property tax book shows that John Marshall was taxed for four slaves over 16 years old: Jack, Judy, Cate, Amy, and 2 slaves over 12 and under 16 years: Tom and Anaky.

In 1784 John Marshall's tax assessment in Mecklenburg County was for five slaves over 16 years old: Jack, Judy, Cate, Amy, Liller, and 4 slaves under 16 and over 12 years; Tom, Anaky, Eddy, Fanny. Also in 1784 John Marshall and Henry Moody (II) bought 1,742 acres on the south side of Butchers Creek from William Call.  In 1785 and 1786 John Marshall was assessed taxes for 9 slaves. He had no assessments for personal property in Mecklenburg County after 1786. (Jodie Gee pointed out that Henry Moody was the husband of Elizabeth Marshall who was John Marshall's sister)

In 1787 his land assessment was for 265 acres; in Jan. 1787 he sold 300 acres to his brother-in-law, Arthur Moody. Also in Jan 1787 John Marshall and his wife Rebecca sold their interest in 683 acres of the partnership land to his partner, Henry Moody (II) (Mecklenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 7, p 97) (Jodie Gee stated Arthur Moody was husband of Mary Marshall who was John Marshall's half sister)

In May 1795, Francis Moody, son and executor of Henry Moody (II), deceased, was ordered by the court to pay John Marshall $5.40 for attending court six days as a witness for Francis in his suit against Charles Burton, a man to whom the partners had sold 103 l/2 acres in 1787.

In Nov. 1799, John Marshall was living in Granville County, North Caroline, which adjoins Mecklenburg County, Va., when he and his nephew Francis Moody, administrator of Henry Moody (II) deceased, apparently had some differences of opinion concerning the partnership of Henry Moody (II) and John Marshall. This conflict was revealed in a power of attorney executed Nov. 56, 1799, to Francis Moody by his mother, Elizabeth (Marshall) Moody, "to manage a law suit which may be necessary to be brought against John Marshall of North Carolina...and to relinquish any right to dower which I may have...and to make agreements for me to the division of land...whereof my deceased husband died possessed." (Mecklenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 10, p 216.
