Jeffery lives in Bourbon, IN and has always been
interested in the Old West & Wyatt Earp. He vacationed in Tombstone, AZ
about 6 years ago and shortly after that became involved in the re-enactments
of the wild west. He belongs to a group known as "Shadows of the Old
West." "Shadows" consists of a group of folks who relive the
wild west of the 1880s. Many of their skits are based on historic fact while
some are for entertainment only. Billed as a family show, there are several
husband and wife teams in the case, and, in some cases, whole families.
They refrain from the gory sights that have become
common in TV and movies. Instead, they try to entertain and educate with a mix
of actual happenings and some just for fun. The cast comes from a wide area of
northern Indiana, and they have delighted audiences in that area for the last
four years.
The group competed in the national competition of
old west re-enactors held at Buffalo Bills Irma Hotel in Cody, WY to
"accolades," according to a spokesman. (PFLot News 8-12-2000)
Jeff
has spent much of his free time during recent summers traveling the midwest
portraying Wyatt Earp or Morgan Earp, Wyatt Earp’s brother in various
re-enactment’s of the Old West. He acted out one of the most infamous events
in Old West Lore: The Shoot-out At The O.K. Corral which was Oct. 26, 1881 at
Tombstone, AZ. He went to Arizona in 1997 to take part in a filming of the
event. In February 1999, he was contacted by a member of that cast and asked
if he would like to reprise his role as Morgan Earp in a new and longer
version of the film. While there he met Wyatt Earp, a grandnephew of the
legendary Wyatt Earp who was residing in Phoenix and had presented programs
about his famous uncle in this country and in Europe.
The film was made at what is termed as "Earp
Headquarters," the Apache Junction Motel, in Apache Junction. (Bourbon
News-Mirror 7 Oct 1999) Two films were made at Apache Land Movie Studio.
Jeff was interviewed by J. Michael Rodrigues, a News
Tribune Reporter, Lasalle, IL in Jul, 2000. Rodrigues wrote: Jeff Worsham
takes a puff of a cigarette just minutes before he cocks his shotgun and goes
on a rampage. The Bourbon, IN man not only resembles Wyatt Earp--he lives
Wyatt Earp.
‘For me, it’s like a living history lesson,’
he said before performing as Wyatt in the OK Corral re-enactment at Wyatt Earp’s
birthplace in Monmouth, IL. ‘The beautiful thing about it is sharing this
with other people.’
Exactly four lawmen, three Earp brothers, Doc
Holiday, the sheriff and six cowboys and a crowd full of adult and children
onlookers fit in the spacious side yard of the birthplaces. The actors and
actresses have traveled from as far as Arizona and Ohio to perform.
But Worsham, who does shows ‘from New York to
California,’ said there are many things that draw actors and actresses to
these shows.
‘It’s real neat to meet blood relatives of the
participants at the OK Corral,’ Worsham said. ‘It’s something you can’t
put into words.’
Worsham has a shrine at home that covers some
memorabilia and replicas of the things used by Earp and in the days of the Old
West. He travels with photos in his car of his office in Bourbon.
He said his love for history and for Earp
memorabilia has been something that has always been with him. ‘I have always
been a cowboy at heart,’ said the tall, skinny man with the thin, shiny
mustache. ‘When you’re young and foolish, you waste a lot of time and
money. You travel to this piece of history and you see these places and feel
like you’re a part of it. It’s fabulous.’
Jeff is an active member and Vice President of the
Wyatt Earp’s Birthplace, Monmouth, IL

Mathias T. Washam. Marriage date to Martha E. Pinnell Meadows should be abt
1890 Indian Territory instead of 4 Jan 1903 as they appeared together in the 1890 Cherokee Census. The 4 Jan 1903 date is when he married Alice Reynolds Glass. (Page
226) Civil War Veteran, Mathias, was born 27 Feb 1840 Anderson Co, TN, died 14 May 1925 Pryor, Mayes, OK. His Cherokee Nation enrollment was declined in 1902 in Prior Creek, Indian Territory. In the picture is his 3rd wife,
Alice Reynolds born 4 Oct 1871 Lawrence, Douglas Co, KS. Picture from Ella Martin Washam, 1996. Jerri
(Rogers) Chasteen, Claremore, OK, 2002, wrote that Martha’s parents are:
“Horace R. Pinnell, b 1827 MO md Mary Jane Nealy Horn 11 Sep 1848 Collin Co
TX. Mary b 25 Jul 1828 Oothcalaga, in the old Cherokee Nation (east- now called
GA) Her parents: Jeremiah Horn (white) & Alsie Hicks- Cherokee. Jeremiah was
a member of the Peters Colony who settled that area of TX. Although most of
Jeremiah's ancestors came to this country as Quakers, he became a minister in
the Methodist Church. He also founded at least three churches in Collin Co, TX.
Alsie was the daughter of Chief Charles R. Hicks, who died in the old Nation,
Jan 1828. Many of
Horn/Hicks/Dougherty descendants still reside in Mayes and the surrounding
counties, and most of them are Cherokee tribal members.”
