Baker Co, OR (5-1930) d 12 Oct 2006 Settlerspark, Baker, OR. His obituary (Laura Perry,
2006) The Record-Courier, Oct 2006:
Robert Vernon
Derrick, 82, a life time resident of Baker City, Ore., died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006,
at Settlerspark in Baker City.
A Celebration in recognition of Bob's exceptional life and love for his family,
friends and community will be held Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at Coles Funeral Home,
1950 Place St., Baker City, 11 a.m.
Everyone is invited to a reception immediately following at Baker City's Quail Ridge
Golf Course.
A fourth generation Oregonian, Bob was born June 30, 1924, in Baker, Ore., to Delbert
and Tina Worsham Derrick.
At an early age Bob experienced life in nearby logging camps during the depression
era. Raised and educated in Baker, he was a member of the 1941 Championship Baker
Bulldogs. After graduation from Baker High School he joined the U.S. Navy and
following training as a radioman at Texas A&M University, he joined the 7th Fleet in
the South Pacific.
Serving aboard both Destroyers and Destroyer Escorts he was involved in many of the
major naval battles of the Solomon Islands Campaign. Later, at Okinawa he and his ship
along with the rest of the invasion fleet suffered through the last ditch efforts of
the Japanese Kamikaze attacks. Near the end of the war Bob and his radio crews were on
the beach at Iwo Jima in support of the Marine landing force as the island was secured
in one of the most bitterly fought battles of WWII. Attaining the rank of Chief Petty
Officer in 1945, he returned to his beloved Baker at wars end.
Soon after returning home he met the love of his life and married Alladyne Metcalf on
March 10, 1946. Bob soon found himself involved in community affairs, the American
Legion, the Legion's traveling basketball team, the Drum and Bugle Corps, the Baker
Volunteer Fire Department and the Baker Jaycees.
Joining with many of his fellow Navy veterans, a local Naval Reserve unit was formed.
In 1950, during the Korean conflict, the unit was activated and Bob and his fellow
reservists returned to active duty.
Following his two year tour of duty, Bob returned home, permanently, to the community
he cherished. Bob went to work for Builder's Supply, a local retail/wholesale building
materials business and became an expert glazier. He followed this, working for
California Pacific Utilities (OTEC's predecessor) as a public relations officer. In
1954 he went to work for Lew Bros. Tire Service, becoming a minority partner with
Pleas Brown, where he worked until his retirement in 1985.
Bob was a member of the Baker Masonic Lodge, Baker Valley Scottish Rite, Baker Shrine
Club and a 50 year member of the Baker Elks. He served three separate terms as
President of the Shrine Club and was Game Coordinator of the Shrine East-West All Star
Football Game for over 20 years. He was also a major driving force behind the
volunteer effort that paid for and constructed the east side bleachers at Bulldog
Memorial Stadium. Bob was an avid supporter of Baker youth athletics.
A hunter, angler and all around outdoor enthusiast, he thoroughly enjoyed his cabin
and lake near upper Rock Creek where he and Alladyne shared unforgettable fellowship
with many close friends and family members. It is uncertain if Bob's involvement with
the game of golf was a passion, obsession or curse, as tales of his exploits at the
Baker City Golf Course are near legend. Bob was a life time member of the Baker City
Golf Club and "The Nuts" golf group.
He was blessed with a unique personality that enabled him, no matter the circumstance,
to turn the adverse into the positive; to instantly transform a stranger into a friend
and to add a ray of sunshine into
every life he touched. Bob viewed each day as a gift and an opportunity to bring
happiness to those around him. He was a credit to his country, his community, his
family and himself. He will be missed.
Bob is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Debra Derrick of Jamaica;
granddaughters, Kimi Carlson, Michael Derrick; grandsons, Bill and Joe Derrick, (both
presently serving in the U.S.
Marine Corps,) nephew, Wayne Lewis and his wife, Gloria; 3 great-grandsons; and three
generations of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alladyne; brother, Cecil; sister, Pansy Derrick
Lewis.
Contributions may be given to the Shriners Hospital through Coles Funeral Home, 1950
Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

According to Dorothy Elizabeth Washam Torpey, 2004, she was related to the infamous Donner family that moved to
California. In 1847, the Donner
Party was the most famous tragedy in the history of the westward migration.
Almost ninety wagon train emigrants were unable to cross the Sierra Nevada
before winter, and almost one-half starved to death. They were ordinary people
- farmers, merchants, parents, children. Of the 83 members of the Donner Party
who were trapped in the mountains, only 45 survived to reach California.
The following
from Jeanette Sander, 1999:
"Fernandas was a railroad worker for B&O Railroad for 59 years,
retired on Jan 1, 1928 as the oldest man in the point of service on the
Indianapolis division. He was a master carpenter of the railroad bridges and
buildings for B & O between Springfield, IL and Hamilton, OH. He was a
member of the Knights of Pythias, and Masonic order. Last residence was 226 N.
Belleview, Indianapolis, IN. Fernandas died 16 May 1929 Indianapolis, Marion,
Indian from Tetanus from a rose splinter in hand about two weeks before and
Bronchial Pneumonia. Sarah and Fernandas are buried in area 11 of Memorial
Park Cemetery, E. Washington St, Indianapolis, IN."
