Daniel S Worsham "Dan" b 3 Mar 1856 Sullivan Co, TN & d 21 Mar
1923 Spartanburg, SC as D S Worsham. (South Carolina Death Records)
There has been some controversy over the name
of Daniel’s wife Lura Rezine Brooks whom he married 13 Aug 1880. In the Jun 1880 Madison
Co, NC census Daniel Warshaw is listed with his wife Leatha Warshaw age 19. In the 1900
Spring Creek, Madison, NC census, he is Dan S. Washam age 44 b Jan 1856 TN with wife Elura
R. Age 39 b Dec 1860. It looks like Leatha & Elura are two different individuals. Elura R
being Lura Rezine whom he married 13 Aug 1880. In the 1870 Spring Creek, Madison, NC
census, there is a Lethy C Brooks age 10 listed with her mother, Frances Brooks age 33.
Therefore, it appears that Daniel was married twice, 1st) to Lethy
C Brooks abt 1879 & 2nd) to Lura Resign Brooks 13 Aug
1880. It is probable that Lethy C (b abt 1860) died in childbirth when their daughter
Theodosia was born 30 Jun 1880. Lura and Lethy are the d/o Terrell Anderson Brooks &
Frances Elizabeth Lusk. (1870 Township 8, Madison, NC census) Lura Resign Brooks "Laura Rezine" b 15 Dec 1860 Madison, NC & d 2 Oct 1961 Hendersonville, Henderson, NC.
There is another controversy: On Lura Resign
Worsham’s death certificate, it is stated she was the wife of Joseph Daniel Worsham and
her tombstone also states she was the wife of Joseph Daniel Worsham. The death certificate
also has she was the daughter of Terrell Brooks & Rebecca Lusk. It appears there were two
errors made when the informant Rev Cecil Worsham gave information for the death
certificate. Lura was the wife of Daniel S. Worsham and the wife of Terrell Brooks was
Frances Elizabeth Lusk not Rebecca. (In the 1860 Madison Co, NC census T A Brooks is
listed with his wife Elizabeth G Brooks age 23 with son Joseph A Brooks age 2. In the
1870 Spring Creek, Madison, NC is Frances Brooks age 33 with children: Joseph A Brooks age
12, Lethy C age 10, Laura J age 8, Levrell A (Teyrill) Age 6 & Lonzo T. (Al Hamann,

and one of his 3 wives. He had one child with Lethy Brooks, the rest with Lura Brooks, so
I don't know who she is in this pic.

page 10 are Joseph A Brooks age 12, Lethy C Brooks, age 10, Laura J Brooks age 6, brother Teyrill Brooks age 6, and Lonzo T age 1 and mother Frances Brooks age 33)

TRAGIC DEATH OF LITTLE BOY
Frank Kenneth Worsham, Aged 6, Falls into a Well While
Measuring Depth of Water
Frank Kenneth Worsham, aged six years, son of Mrs Mattie
Worsham of Powell's Station, met death when he fell into a deep well
Tuesday afternoon, probably about three o'clock. The last one to see the
little fellow alive was his little sister, Helen, four years of age. She
hurried to report to her mother that Frank had fallen into the well, but
before assistance could be summoned to rescue him, his life was extinct.
Some time later the child's body was taken from the well and it was
discovered that a hole had been crushed in his head when he fell, striking
the stone walls of the deep well. The well contained about ten feet of
water and it was some distance down to the surface of the water.
The funeral over the remains was conducted Wednesday and
interment was in the Green Hill cemetery. Rev Mr Weaver officiated.
Helen, the little sister of the dead child, explained that
her brother was standing on the platform at the well holding a rope with
whichhe was attempting to measure the depth of the water in the well, when
he accidentally fell to his death.
The child is survived by his mother and the following
brothers and sisters, Charles, Raymond and WL Worsham, Mrs Mary Bradley
and Misses Sadie and Helen and Elva Worsham.

Baxter m Sarah Jane Worsham
"Sallie" in Slabtown, Cocke Co, TN 24 Dec 1887. They were married by
Charlie Goodnough. Sallie's "family lived in NC when my grandfather went to
the town she lived in and met her. They lived around the area for about a year,
then went by train to Texas, and bought land in Shannon, (Clay Co) TX, and
raised their family. Sallie is bur in the Shannon Cem. Her cousin, went to Texas
by train, and md William Alexander Baxter, Sanders brother. Her family thinks
she was a mail order bride, but I told them she was a cousin of Sallie's, and
Sallie probably got them together. I have Sallie's bible. My father was the next
to youngest. Sallie
had 12 children. Two children died, one as a baby, a girl, and one about 10
years of age, another girl. Sallie had heart trouble, and died in her early
50's. My father only knew his mother's name, not where she was from or anything.
She could read and write, and corresponded with her family for years, but never
went back to NC. The story that was passed down was that Sallie and Sanders
walked 20 miles, crossed a railroad track into Tn to get married. The marriage
license had Washburn as her maiden name, but I think now that was a mistake, it
may have been how she pronounced it that it sounded like Washburn. (Ollie Curry,
2001) The family is in the 1900 Clay Co, TN census: Sanders Baxter 37 TN TN TN;

Anna Richter, 2010 wrote:
I just this afternoon had
the most delightful call with Virgie Worsham of Rutherfordton, NC. I sent her a
letter last week, and she was so delighted to get a picture of her grandmother Sarah
as a younger woman. She is Jefferson's daughter, one of the 3 children of his still
living. She's 90, sharp as can be, lives alone with her little Chihuahua, loves to
talk, and talk we did, for nearly 2 hours. She talked about Sarah and William like
she knew them; her mother Stella loved Sarah and she lived with Miss Virgie until
she died, and apparently that's what they did, talk about those days Sarah smoked
pipes! Clay pipes she made herself. She was raised in the Quaker faith, but
converted to Baptist in Spring Creek and was a lady of faith, a religious woman.
Once she was out picking beans, dropping them into her apron she had gathered in her
hand-you know how you do that with an apron-got to thinking about how the Lord had
blessed her, threw up her hands in rejoicing and dropped all the beans. Miss Virgie
is full of quaint stories like that, things we just wouldn't think to talk about
nowadays, when we are too sophisticated and distracted by other entertainment. I
cant wait to hear more about William, who had a blacksmith shop and made furniture,
too. William went off to work in a salt mine during the war-the Civil War. Sarah was
left at home with several young children. She was walking home one day and saw a
Yankee soldier leading her cow away and thought, what are my children going to do?
(without the milk, I think that meant). One night she heard someone coming to the
door and sent the children under the bed. It was William, come home from the salt
mine. The war was over, but Sarah hadn't heard. They also hid their eggs in the bed
from the Yankees. Although 'coming home from the salt mine' lacks the drama of
'walking home from Appomattox,' doesn't it? She confirmed that Sarah was 'Dutch'
(this would be German actually, I've learned), spoke heavily accented English. Miss
Virgie says that a niece has a picture of William Odell Worsham!! It would be hard
to express how delighted I was to hear that. Miss Virgie has a few pictures, not
many; she's going to go to Wal-Mart and 'run them off' for us. We should all be so
lively at 90.
